TV Shows and The Internet
TV shows and the internet are becoming more and more inexplicably tied together. The TV shows trend tends to go to the internet more and more considering that many fandoms tend to congregate around websites that revolve around their favorite show, discussing latest storylines on their forums. Smarter or more open producers even use the internet to promote, market and even distribute their shows in the hopes that the fact that the internet crosses oceans easily will give them some free attention. The thing is, they’re correct. The gift of the internet is that it doesn’t matter what time it is – someone, somewhere, will be able to access stuff that you put up on the internet, much to your benefit or the benefit of what you put up.
In the early 2000s the TV shows trend was reality TV. Every station wanted them because they could create emotionally charged scenes while simultaneously saving money because less writers are involved – if any at all in fact. This made for some very profitable television. While the boon has waned, there are still some long running shows like American Idol, the Amazing Race and Survivor that continue to thrive and make money for their respective networks.
TV shows have also leapt onto the World Poker Tour bandwagon, an example of reality TV and scripted TV crossing over. Casinos both online and offline find themselves increasing in popularity as show after show found a way to work a casino online or poker related storyline into their existing plots. Lie to Me and Supernatural are only two shows that involved gambling in one form or another.
The current TV shows trend apparently revolves around horror in one form or another. For a time zombie and vampire shows, perhaps reflecting the current movie trends, dominated the TV scene and on some level, they still do, but to far less severity. The next trend seems to be espionage and alien attacks, as expressed by shows such as Nikita and the endurance of Leverage.
The Casino is a reality TV show that follows the inner workings of a Las Vegas casino. It was created by the spectacular Mark Burnett, creator of “The Apprentice” and of course, the world famous “Survivor”. The casino itself is the Golden Nugget Casino with all its fruit machines, a business that sits nicely in downtown Las Vegas. The show revolves around Tim Poster and Tom Breitling, who have long dreamed of running a casino.
The 2011 TV season is going strong. Long-runners currently dominate the top spots, long runners such as “30 Rock” and “House”. That isn’t to say newcomers aren’t breaking into the big numbers. Comedy shows such as “Community” and “Modern Family” have both found strong and consistent markets and viewership.
American Casino follows “The Casino” as another casino show that looks to examine the inner workings of these establishments, though this one is funded and shown on the Discovery Travel Channel. It instead follows the Green Valley Ranch Casino and it has consistently received favorable reviews for its portrayal.
